Gravel Sportive, Medium Route, 19th April 58km

Our next Gravel Sportive will take place in the excellent Wye Valley on Easter Saturday, 19th April.

We will be starting the event at Devauden Village Hall and will follow a fantastic route through the Forest on both sides of the River Wye.

The majority of the route is off road, following gravel trails and some singletrack. Any roads used are generally quiet and are only used in short stretches in order to reach the next off road section.

The ride will start at 9.30am and we expect all riders to have finished by 4pm.

There will be a feed station at Redbrook, which is 31km into the ride.

Route Details

The ride starts at Devauden Village Hall, near Chepstow. The ride will start at 9.30am.

Devauden Village Hall is ideally situated for this event, with excellent parking nearby.

It is situated at the southern end of the route, close to the first off road section that you will ride.

The route will head north along lanes, bridleways and gravel tracks through the woods at the top of the Wye Valley before dropping down a wonderfully long and fast gravel descent to the river.

At Redbrook, you will take the old footbridge across to the Gloucestershire side of the river and enjoy some well earned food and drink at our first feed station.

A long climb, both on and off road follows the feed station, taking you up to Coleford, before heading south towards St Briavels and Hewelsfield.

You will turn right at Hewelsfield and take the excellent descent down the side of the Wye Valley, arriving on the lovely bridge at Brockweir, where you will cross the river to the Monmouthshire side.

A short ride alongside the river will follow before heading up into the woods for the final climb back to Devauden and the finish, where food and cider will await!

The Medium Route route is 58km long and has 1227m of climbing.

Safety

If all riders follow some basic safety guidelines we can all expect an enjoyable day!

All riders must conform to the laws of the road. This means keeping to the left, allowing vehicles to pass and not riding more than two abreast unless it is safe to do so and you are not holding up traffic.

There are several sets of traffic lights on the medium Route route plus a couple of pedestrian controlled crossings with lights and riders must obey the lights. Marshals will be in attendance around the route.

Please take extra care when riding off road sections. Be aware of walkers, horses and other cyclists. If you wish to overtake, please give a warning beforehand so the other person can move safely to the side, allowing you to pass.

There will be one split point where Medium Route riders take a different route to Long Route riders. This point will be clearly marked.

Every rider is required to wear a helmet.

All Black Rat signs will be black with an orange arrow indicating the direction you should ride. You will see SLOW! signs in some places around the course. Please ensure that you take notice of these – they are there for your own safety!
