Cycling Trips in Portugal

Portugal offers riders an outstanding option for anyone thinking of taking a cycling trip abroad.

With a base near Lisbon, we offer cycling trips across the whole country but we concentrate on 4 main areas:

  • Lisbon and surrounding areas
  • Algarve
  • Porto and the Douro Valley
  • Serra da Estrela

Each area has it’s own unique characteristics and is a pleasure to ride. Roads are quiet and usually in very good condition, the weather is mild and usually sunny, the scenery is lovely and the rides can be as challenging as you want to make them.

Rides in Lisbon and the surrounding area

Lisbon is a great place to base yourself if you want some great quality riding coupled with the culture and tourist hot spots of the capital.

A short hop from Lisbon is the Sintra national park. This area contains beautiful towns and villages and stretches right down to the sea at Cabo da Roca, the most westerly point on mainland Europe.

The riding is fantastic with good climbs and descents as well as beautiful coast roads.

We can tailor a ride to suit abilities of all levels.

If you wish to hire bikes, we can arrange this for you, including the hire of ebikes.

On the other side of the river from Lisbon is the Arrabida national park. This area is right on the coast and is one of the prettiest rides we know. There are a couple of fairly long climbs to tackle but the views make the effort more than worthwhile.

Trips can be one day or more, depending on your requirements.

Cycling in the Algarve is a real pleasure. Away from the coast the roads are very quiet and the mountains of the Algarve rise up to 900m. The climbs are fairly long (about 7km for the main climbs) on great surfaces so the descents are fantastic.

The terrain in Algarve is best suited for riders who ride regularly and don’t mind lumpy days in the saddle.

We ride regularly down here and know the best routes to give you maximum satisfaction.

We suggest that you book a minimum of two days in order to really savour what this area has available. We can arrange airport transfers from Faro.

Bike hire is available (Pinarello Angrilu) and ebikes can be hired upon request.

Douro Valley

The Douro Valley is our favourite area to ride in Portugal. The scenery is just stunning, the roads are virtually empty of other traffic, the climbs and descents are long and the food and wine are fabulous. What’s not to like?

In our opinion, the best riding is found in Alto Douro, based near the town of Peso da Regua. It is based on the river Douro so before you start any ride, you get a nice leg stretcher riding alongside the river before starting the climbing.

Climbing is the important word when it comes to this area. The rides zig zag around the river up the valley sides. They are long climbs, 10km is quite normal and some of them are steep but mostly they are pleasant climbs giving a better view of the beautiful area each time you go round the next bend.

We recommend a minimum of two days on this trip. We can organise bike hire, airport transfers from Porto and accommodation.

All of these trips are bespoke, depending on your requirements. Contact us to discuss and for costs.

Serra da Estrela

Serra da Estrela, in the north of Portugal is a fabulous mountain range containing Portugal’s highest point – Torre – at 1993m.

There are plenty of different routes up and down the mountains as well as around the base which makes this a great tour for a 3 or 4 day stay.

The roads are quiet (as with most places in Portugal) and the climbs are all fairly long at around 10km – 15km. This is very much like the type of climbs you would experience in the Alps or Pyrenees, but without the crowds.

Hotels in the area are inexpensive and good quality local produce is found on the menus of restaurants and hotels.

Tacked on to any trip to Serra da Estrela, it is possible to spend a couple of days in the area around Lousa, just over an hour south of the Serra. Or if the high mountains aren’t for you, this could be the perfect trip instead.

This is another mountainous region, although only about half the height of Serra da Estrela. We know some outstanding routes around Lousa and we promise you that you will be grinning when you finish these rides. The climbs aren’t steep but they are quite long. You know you have put in some effort but you aren’t left struggling to reach the top. The descents are fantastic – long and well surfaced. This is one of our favourite places to ride anywhere!

We can arrange a trip for individuals or groups to any of the places mentioned. Just contact us with numbers of guests and preferred dates and we can arrange something suitable for you, including bike hire or e-bike hire if required.
