Join us for a spectacular trip around the Picos national park.
Based in three faboulous locations, we have planned an amazing week of riding including some stupendous climbs, La Vuelta classics and stunning gorges. Quite simply this breathtakingly savage landscape will amaze you!
Besides the amazing riding, you can dream of perfect Pintxos (Basque for Tapas), devine Rioja wine and fabulous, friendly towns and villages where we will stay and ride.
This is definitely a “sporty” trip with some tough days riding but we have planned so that all of the rides can be cut short if you don’t feel that you want to ride the whole route every day.
After transfer from Bilbao airport we arrive in Oviedo, a fantastic town close to some of the most feared mountains in Northern Spain, where we will spend the first two nights of the trip.
The town itself is a hidden gem, far off most of the normal tourist trails in Spain. The food in the small restaurants and bars is excellent and the town is famous for it’s cider! (We’ll see if the locals want to try some Black Rat cider).
Riding from here we will ride south of the town and tackle the steep slopes of El Angliru, the most feared climb used in the Vuelta a Espana.
We leave Oviedo after 2 nights and take an excellent route to Cangas de Onis at the edge of the Picos de Europa National Park. The town is surrounded by high mountains and is very much an activity centre with climbing, kayaking, canyoning and much more taking place in the surrounding mountains.
Cangas de Onis also sits at the foot of another Vuelta classic climb, the Covadonga, which we will tackle as part of our ride on our first day there. The Covadonga is well known to followers of the Vuelta a Espana. It’s a long climb with some steep sections and is definitely one to tick off of your bucket list.
We’ll stay for two nights in Cangas de Onis before setting off for our final destination in Potes.
We will stay for three nights here. Our riding will take us inland to the high peaks of the Picos de Europa and will include the famous Deva Gorge, where you can cycle beneath rock overhangs on the way up.
From there we have then planned some fantastic, arduous climbs that are on excellently surfaced roads with little traffic. Cycling here really is a pleasure!
There are famous climbs aplenty here, including the Fuente De and Puerto de San Glorio to name but two.
We will visit stunning valleys and stop at the many lookout points. You will need to stop to take it all in! We’ll also take you up high then drop down to the coast on our final day for a spectacular ride that includes the best of the area.
A celebration banquet on our final Saturday evening will be followed by transfers back to Bilbao for the flights home.
This trip is for the more discerning cyclist that can see beyond the Alps or Dolomites and looks for different adventures on quiet roads elsewhere. You won’t be disappointed!
Most days we will cycle between 70-90 miles and climb on average 2500m each day. Options to take shorter flatter routes are available if you wish for an easier ride.
Our usual level of care and attention goes should go without saying. We want you to enjoy yourselves as much as possible.
Price includes hotels, breakfast and evening meal. Also transfers to and from Bilbao airport and between hotels where required.
It includes a supporting vehicle to resupply on the road alongside a minimum of 2 outriders actually helping and guiding around the routes. They will also help with any minor mechanicals if needed.
